1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Picture
The mission of 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten is to promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers, to encourage parent and child bonding through reading and to prepare your child for a lifetime of reading.

Research shows that reading books and sharing stories with your child is one of the best ways to help them enter school with the language skills they need to be ready to learn and grow.

You can download the first reading log below, or pick up a Reading Log in the Children’s room and start logging the titles of the books that your child reads, or that you read to your child.  Remember to include stories that your child hears at library storytimes, in preschool and daycare – any and all books and stories count!

A display in the Children’s room offers suggestions of books that will help your child select books that appeal to their interests.  Children often enjoy repeat visits with the same book or story, so you may log it multiple times!

When you’ve logged 25 titles, bring the completed log back into the library, pick up a prize and get the next Reading Log.  If you read 4 books a week, your child will have listened to 1,000 stories in five years!
